The construction of the plant at Ta’ Barkat made Malta the first Mediterranean country to treat all of its sewage before dumping it into the sea.

The new plant can also produce one megawatt of electricity per hour.

The plant consists of a complex of tanks used for biofiltration processes, alternating between aerobic and anoxic environments, to remove the organic waste from civil wastewater. ASDEA designed the plant’s Advanced Aerobic Biological Filtration and Oxygenated Reactor (BIOFOR) building.
